Chapter 20

Jett’s feet hit the pavement. She stands on a wide street, surrounded by large domiciles. It’s the place where Trainer Feisor captured her before sending her to the facility.

Doctor Mallus told Trainer Feisor the upload wasn’t until eleven, so it must be late morning. The sun is well over the domiciles at her right, casting short shadows next to each building. The light bounces off the windows to her left, and Jett can see the reflection of the perfect autumn sky.

The buildings look similar in the daylight as they had in the night. At the edge of each domicile is a matching pastel door. The grounds are empty on either side of the street, but the backyard of every home is abutted by woodland.

The woods are farther away than the domiciles, but probably her safest route.

A canine barks in the distance, reminding her she can’t afford to stand still. Not only does she want to avoid an attack from the animal, but she knows the Balvans will soon follow her. It’s only a matter of time.

She looks at the two, long rows of buildings that flank the street. It is open here, and if they come through the packager in the next few seconds, they will surely see her. She needs to hide—fast.

Digging her heels in, she takes off, running to the left where the backs of the domiciles are in shadow. It will give her cover until she decides whether she can reach the woods safely.

The cool air stings her cheeks as she runs. She imagines what she looks like going full tilt in the white, gauzy tunic. If anyone looks out of the domiciles, they won’t likely miss her.

She’s almost to the light-yellow domicile, the first to her left, when she hears voices behind her. A few strides more, and she skids to a stop and leans against the back of the building, out of sight. She peeks back quickly and tries to keep from being seen. Three figures stand where she emerged from the packager. They are guards, all wearing red jumpsuits.

Beyond the packager is a larger building. It’s got to be the same building she came from, but she also recognizes it as the building with the dumpster. She’s in the same area, except on the other side of the road.

Now she’s here, there’s no way she’ll risk her hiding place to run for the woods. They would see her as soon as she took off. The good news is she’s familiar with the domiciles. It’s not a huge advantage, but she’ll take what she can get.

The guards are sure to start with the first domiciles and work their way down. They will probably split up to check each one. Jett needs to make sure she is not in one of the first ones, because there’s no place for her to hide in the empty buildings.

Jett is already moving, pushing along past the light-yellow domicile and into the shadow of the pink one. She doesn’t linger; she’s much too close to the packager.
